VIFF Opening, TIFF Board Changes, Social Impact Award, SMPIA Party

The Vancouver International Film Festival kicks off tonight with the showing of Brooklyn, an international co-production (Canada, Ireland, UK) telling the story of a young immigrant woman in 1950’s New York — our Nick will be there to cover it.

With this year’s TIFF completed, the Festival’s Board of Directors is announcing some changes today: Three Board members are retiring to be replaced by three long-time TIFF supporters. In place of Brendan Calder, Linda Chu and David Kassie, the Board welcomes Betty-Ann Heggie, Sabi Marwah and Francis Shen.

(Via CNW) We’ve mentioned the 11th Montreal International Black Film Festival — now comes an announcement that Academy award-winner Paul Haggis and Ciné Institute Founder  David Belle will be honoured at the Festival with the 2015 Social Impact Award. Both men have worked to bring education, health care, and dignity to the poorest children of Haiti, through Artists for Peace and Justice. Haggis founded APJ and Belle serves as CEO.

Remember, SMPIA’s Industry Mixer for film people in Regina is tonightdetails here.
