A rather hilarious movie. I don’t come across too many of them. Maude (Jennifer Mclean) tries hard to have a baby, but with no success. Her husband E.L. (Raul Inglis), who has been with her since high school, can’t do a very good job at impregnating her. And so far this marriage isn’t really going anywhere fun as one would expect, not even putting on international accents during intercourse makes it better . No matter what they attempt, almost nothing works in their mundane life.
Then one day, the pregnancy test reads successful. Maude can’t contain her excitement. But then she consults her doctor and it’s nothing more than early menopause. She talks to her only work friend, Tracey (Stephanie Bally) and makes a plan to join a menopause group. Her other plan is to go along with a couples swinging club that E.L. signed them up for and not tell E.L. about the menopause.
At first E.L. is nervous at the club, and Maude is unsure of how to work it all out. After some very awkward nights at the club, Maude finally makes it to the menopause group she heard of, where she meets three other women who ride bikes. Maude goes out with them to get questions answered and problems solved. One particular night, the women reveal that they’re going to ride their bikes naked. Maude is suddenly stuck with the decision whether she should change into a new person or stay her boring old self.
I’m not exactly at the stage in life where I’m married and dealing with a woman who’s disappointed in herself, but I found this amusing. The plot had its moments, there were some foolish but funny jokes that came when least expected, even during the sexual moments in the club, and the acting was great. The cinematography was professional and impressive. Even the choice of soundtrack went along well. I was enjoying this all the way. Also a very good use of Vancouver’s naked bike ride which happens every year. But don’t expect extreme nudity in this one. It’s mild.
