Rickie Lee Jones, Big Game, and Karlovy Vary

The Other Side of Desire is the name of not only a new album by the renowned Rickie Lee Jones, but also of a film about her made by award winning Canadian filmmaker and director Gail Harvey. (Desire, as in Streetcar, is the street in New Orleans where Ms. Jones lives.) Its release is something to look forward to. Cashbox Magazine has the story.

It’s not just for the independent little guy: Big Game  writer/director Jalmari Helander “gives us the illusion of locations and money while cleverly skimping on both,” says Chris Knight in The National Post.

Just about the same time François Péloquin’s drama Le bruit des arbres was premiering at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic, it was also playing for the press in Montreal, and The Montreal Gazette’s Brendan Kelly has a review of this film about a father and son one summer in the Gaspé.

There’s more about the venerable Czech festival and Canadian filmmakers there in this Globe and Mail article  by Calum Marsh.

Check back later for 321 Weekend, where Nick looks at the films playing in Canada this weekend and makes some recommendations.
