Christmas Eve News: Mainly from Saskatchewan

There are a couple of interesting events coming up in the New Year for filmmakers in Saskatchewan, according to the Saskatchewan Media Production Industry Association (SMPIA). On January 9th and 10th in Regina, Avi Federgreen, producer and distributor of low-budget Canadian films, holds a workshop on What They Don’t Teach You in Film School — all you need to know to make and distribute independent low-budget movies in this country. Details and signup are here. You can also learn about the industry standard budgeting software that will help you keep track of your modest resources, Movie Magic, in a workshop with Rhonda Baker on January 30th and 31st, also in Regina. Read all about that here.

In more news out of Saskatchewan (sort of), CBC News reports that composer Julian Beutel, who grew up in Melville, has  “noticed that this film I was involved with just got shortlisted for the Oscars.” The film is the animated short  An Object at Rest. Beutel served as composer and musical director, as well as playing the trumpet for the soundtrack. You can watch this story of several millennia in the life of a rock here.

We’ll be on a reduced publishing schedule for the holidays — enjoy yours.
