Travel back in time with The Moviegoer – Mini-Review

A story about the olden days, back in 1972. I know nothing about the 70s, since I didn’t even exist back then. I don’t even think I was spermatozoa just yet. But I’ve always wondered what times were like back then. They were much more simple. Before COVID. Actually lots of times were much more simple before COVID. Nowadays, my paranoia is enough to get me admitted to an asylum at the next sign of more deadly spreadings. But let’s get into this film, directed by a man who’s made quite a few shorts and continues to tell all kinds of fantastic stories, like this one.

Ross Munro tells a story about what got him into movies when he was only 9 years old: A lovely actress who starred in so many beautiful movies. Ross wrote a love letter to her and even goes on to explain how the actress got famous, and how his childhood went as his father tried to find a decent path that would send him progressing into life. Ross got involved in hockey but didn’t last long and pursued watching movies instead. When, he was 9, Ross decided to check Kansas City Roller, a movie about Roller Derby ladies and starring his favourite actress. Shortly after, Ross’s father buys him a video camera and Ross starts his very first film which is supposed to be an interesting Hollywood flick. From there, he took on several interests, attended film school, and met the love of his life, Maria.

It sounds short and simple, which it is, but the layout is a bit complex which is interesting. It’s a combination of live-action, and animation. It also includes old footage from an old Super 8 camera, filmed by Ross himself, contains vintage photos for a few bits, and the whole thing is combined so well it feels like you went back in time. A great tale of greater days to remind us things weren’t always so stressful and hopefully reduce stress for some of us, it actually kind of helped me out a bit. It’s a worthwhile film with a merging of classic and modern charms.
