Talent on Tap – Julian Black Antelope Portrays Chief George in Thunderbird

Indigenous culture and stories are finally making it to mainstream cinema. What took so long, right? I anticipate some incredible films in the near future will be Wowing us all. There has been an outcry for more authenticity in film and television, as well as more diverse actors and stories. Are the studios actually paying attention and knocking the hinges off the doors, in response to the public… or will it be short lived and go back to old habits and practices once we look the other way? Indie filmmakers are not waiting for big studios or permission to tell the stories they are passionate about. Which leads me to believe that cultural driven films, more diverse films are here to stay. Let’s inspire younger generations to pick up the torch and continue a new legacy of Indigenous and cultural films – that inspire, teach, engage and break down stereotypes.

Thunderbird is a film that brings back some of that folklore, mystic and cultural storytelling, while investigating a murder mystery. Written and directed by Nicolas Treeshin, with producers Michael Morrison, Colten Wilke, Gabrielle Adelman, and Ben Plamondon. Together, they bring this story about the fear of the unknown, the pain of guilt and confronting the darkest parts of our past to your screen. The Coast Salish legend of the Thunderbird is an integral part of the story. This film also exposes the racial tensions in a small fishing town on the Pacific Northwest, while the search for a missing family member begins. Constructed against the rugged beauty of the Pacific Northwest, the story takes a deep and dark descent into the desperation of the search.

Thunderbird stars Colten Wilke in his first starring role, Natalie Brown (Sophie, Clarice, The Strain, Dark Matter), Julian Black Antelope (Tribal, Debris, The Secret History of – The Wild West, Into the West, Blackstone), Aaron Douglas (Battlestar Galactica, Van Helsing, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency) and William Belleau (Blackway, Killers of the Flower Moon, Van Helsing). I’ve been lucky enough to watch this film and I need to say that I haven’t seen a cast this talented, so committed and so well picked, since the latest big blockbuster. I need to mention that this is an Indy film with incredible production value and a well told story. Nicolas has done his job, along with the cast and crew. It takes an army to make a feature film. There were definitely some challenges and great stories that came out of the production of this film. It was covered in a previous article/interview with director Nicolas Treeshin and actress, Ava Sleeth a couple of weeks ago. The film had premiered on Amazon Prime Video on June 4, 2021 and Julian Black Antelope was going to be part of that interview… but there were some technical difficulties. We postponed and it was well worth the wait.

“Thunderbird is a story about the search for a missing girl, but beneath the surface – it’s about the fear of the unknown, the pain of guilt and confronting the darkest parts of our past.”

Director, Nicolas Treeshin

I sent my questions off to Julian and he had some very insightful answers that I look forward to sharing, from this incredibly talented, self-taught actor. He is as good as it gets because he loves what he does and his dedication is on another level. The industry is lucky to have him and he’s also added writing, directing and producing to his portfolio. Julian Black Antelope is an anomaly picking up speed with much to say.  Roll the tape!

HNMAG “In the film Thunderbird, you play Chief George. How familiar were you with the customs and ritual ceremonies before this film?”

JULIAN “Being from the prairies our ceremonies are different but yet similar at the same time, that is to say the spiritual aspects are the same, but it is necessary to understand and respect the protocols of the “Big Houses”, as it’s different than what I’m used to in a Tipi.”

HNMAG “When you auditioned for the role of chief, how did you prepare?”

JULIAN “Being self taught I went on what I usually do which is instinct, my heart, intuition, call it whatever you like. I always try to approach the material as an empty vessel, no expectations and see where it takes me instinctively as I immerse myself in the work. From a cultural perspective all those years working in ceremonies and listening, watching our spiritual leaders  must have rubbed off on me too,  because when it comes to the “Chief” Roles or other similar characters that are leaders, I do notice mannerisms and characteristics that are subconsciously present in my characters that I create.”

HNMAG “What was your first day like on the set of Thunderbird?”

JULIAN “In one word, AMAZING! And that’s an understatement. Just being in a Big House was an experience in itself and being allowed the privilege to witness one of their most sacred dances was incredible.  It was truly moving, and as a guest from another tribe I offered my gifts of tobacco to the spirits, for allowing me to be there.”

HNMAG “What are your thoughts on seeing more culture rich films that provide the opportunity for you to represent that culture?”

JULIAN “I’m a huge advocate for the exploration of diverse cultures in films, but it has to be an accurate and respectful portrayal and it’s essential that we ensure the appropriate cultural advisors have final say on what’s portrayed. That means being able to override any Director, Producer or writer if necessary, to ensure another’s culture is not marginalized or misrepresented just for the sake of a creative choice. It’s through our advisors that we can maintain proper cultural congruence.”

HNMAG “You’ve been described as having a strong physicality and are often cast as a menacing character. What types of roles would you love to be cast for that you haven’t yet?”

JULIAN “I always thought it might be cool to be one of those anti-hero guys in an extended series. You know the flawed characters who are not invincible but instead, ordinary insecure vulnerable human beings who are making mistakes just trying to do the best they can. There are some incredible projects on so many platforms right now that I would love the opportunity. To carry a series, while being able to spend that kind of time with a character and get to explore every aspect of their world is the dream.”

HNMAG “You dipped your foot into the acting pond in 2004 in the six-part mini-series, Into the West. What was the motivation to pursue acting?”

JULIAN “Around 2004 I was going through a spiritual awakening in my life and wanted to do something but wasn’t sure what and that’s when it hit me. I wanted to act, and eventually write, direct and produce. It was like a voice was whispering in my ear to “piss or get off the pot” and do something with my life. I’m glad I listened to that voice because here I am now, doing all of the above. It’s truly amazing what we are all capable of, once we put our minds to it. It sounds cliché but it’s so true.”

HNMAG “You played Darrien Tailfeathers-a villain for 4 seasons in Blackstone, which earned you a CSA nomination. That’s really incredible for an early career, especially as a self-taught actor. How did you teach yourself?”

JULIAN “Thank you for the kind words, It was a lot of trial and error , taking risks in auditions and seeing what worked and what didn’t. I also took up offers to be on set as a crew member which allowed me the incredible opportunity to study the seasoned actors on set and be a sponge, soaking up what they did with their craft while witnessing the work they put in firsthand.”

HNMAG “You have your hands in writing and producing many interesting projects. The Secret History   Series , TribalDebris, True Fiction, Harpoon, Knuckleball, Alive, Fake Blood, Empyrean and many more productions. Do you enjoy staying that busy and how do you unwind?”

JULIAN “After putting in years to get to this point, I am definitely happiest when I am busy – it makes me feel like my efforts are paying off and there is still so much I want to do in this industry. How do I unwind? Heavy Bag workouts, a dinner out with my family and a good movie. I still find solace getting lost in a great story!”

HNMAG “You credit your sanity, strength and foundation to the practice of your culture’s belief systems/traditions. You’re also forever grateful for the unwavering belief and support that you receive from your loving wife, Tracy Walaschuck and your three beautiful daughters – Sparrow, Emiko and Romin. What are 2 important lessons you will pass along to your children?”

JULIAN “Follow your heart and always be true to yourself. Integrity and honor are things that you can gift yourself with, that no one can take away.”

HNMAG “Having worked all over the world, what is your favourite food?”

JULIAN “Aww man…that’s a toughie… they’re ALL my favorite…but if I had to pick…Hmnnnnn…now I’m getting hungry…That would be a toss up between the smoked cod and chips in Galway, Ireland and the traditional Jordanian dishes I had the privilege of experiencing, at the Prince of Jordan’s dinner. THAT was a lot of dishes, and every single one of them was soooooooo good!!!

Julian was an outstanding guest and his career has reached heights unsee in years. He also writes, directs and produces, which makes him the triple threat with triple the gifts he brings to the table at any film set.

Thank you Julian!
