Silver Linings Playbook
This is a screwball romantic movie. It follows the story of a young woman who is played by Jennifer Lawrence. She suffers from various psychological disorders and she strikes up a relationship with Pat. He is played by Bradley Cooper. He also has his fair share of mental health issues. You also have De Niro who plays Pat Senior. He’s an obsessive Philadelphia Eagles fan and he is caring for his son who is bipolar. The director once stated that De Niro cried when he was finished reading the script. He stated that he thought at the time, he was suffering from allergies. He then realised he was having such a strong reaction to the story and he knew then that he was ideal for the role. He knew his heart would be in it and he just knew that he had to make the movie happen.
Casino
Scorsese has a very entertaining directing style. He also has De Niro as Ace Rothstein. He is a Jewish gangster who is in charge of the Tangiers Casino in Las Vegas. His entire character is based on the mafioso of Frank Rosenthal. Ace tries very hard to resist all of the temptations that come with Sin City but at the end of the day, the city ends up destroying him and it unleashes all of the inner rage that he has. When this movie was filmed, the casino industry wasn’t quite what it is today. In fact, the movie is focused on physical casinos quite a lot but now things have changed. The world of iGaming and online casinos has evolved and now it’s more than possible for you to play games online without any difficulty. There are movies that are much more focused on the digital side of gambling out now, but at the time this movie was filmed, you had to visit a casino if you wanted to gamble.
Jackie Brown
This movie is based on the novel, which is called Rum Punch. It’s got a star-studded cast to say the least and you also have actors such as Samuel L. Jackson, Pam Grier and Bridget Fonda. To top it all off, you also have Robert Forster and Michael Keaton. De Niro plays the role of Louis Gara. He’s an ex-con man and he actually lives with his arms dealer friend, who is played by Jackson. His character is very passive. In fact, he’s unconscious for a lot of it. He only wakes up to smoke pot. Even though it is a very small role, it’s safe to say that he is charming to say the least.
The Untouchables
De Niro plays the role of Prohibition-era leader, Al Capone. He stars in the drama by Brian De Palma and it was filmed in 1987. He receded his hairline and he also wore a lot of padding just so that he could look the part. Capone is hunted by Elliot Ness who is played by the famous Kevin Costner. You also have Sean Connery who is a police officer who prefers to use questionable methods to get the job done.
Once upon a Time in America
This is a four-hour epic and it shows the lives of those involved, over 5 decades. De Niro has the starring role and he is known as being David Noodles. He is a mobster and he gains a lot of notoriety during the Prohibition era. The director employs a very non-linear approach to try and show the way that gangster stories are depicted and it chooses to focus on the theme of regret. Sergio Leone managed to earn a Golden Globe and also a BAFTA nomination as he was the Best Director. He turned down the chance to work on the Godfather so that he could work on this masterpiece. The one problem that he had was that he had over 10 hours of material but he had to cut it all down so that he could work with his distributors.
The Irishman
This is one of De Niro’s latest movies. It’s also the one that people say he gave his best performance in. It’s another collaboration with the one and only Scorsese and it’s three and a half hours long. It’s the culmination of the ideas that the duo have created over the years. De Niro plays the role of Frank Sheeran who is a truck driver. He becomes a hitman after he crosses paths with Joe Pesci and of course, Al Pacino. The actor has taken the time to explain that this movie is in fact very different and that he would put it in the Roma style.
He saw that movie and he states that it is wonderful. He has also gone on to say that the movie has a lot of grandeur that he wanted. Netflix came along and it was just what he needed, and this helped to make sure that he was able to make the movie that he has wanted for quite some time. The movie is well worth the watch if you have not done so already, so make sure that you check it out. It’s got a huge cast and it is safe to say that it is one of the best movies that De Niro has done in all of his time as an accomplished actor.
