TIFF Announces Pitch This! Teams, Creative Saskatchewan Increases Grant Amount

Lots of news coming out about TIFF today . . .

Finalists have been announced for Telefilm Canada’s PITCH THIS! challenge, which will take place September 13th. (Back in June, we told you about The Animation Conference’s version.) The six filmmaking teams will have six minutes each to convince a jury of experts, in front of a live audience, to award them $15,000 for further development.  Congratulations and good luck to:

  • Sharon Lewis and Jenn Paul (Brown Girl in the Ring: The Prequel)
  • Andrew Nicholas McCann Smith, Kjartan Hewitt, and Jordan Canning (Claire, from the Bus)
  • Laura Perlmutter and Daniel Perlmutter (Demonolatry)
  • A.J. Bond (E.V.E)
  • Matthew Hannam and Kaveh Nabatian (Mohammed VI)
  • Daniel Schachter and Constance Malpel (Passover)

TIFF has also announced “a record number of Canadian works in the WavelengthsTIFF programme.” In fact, short films at the Festival this year will include “44 world-class homegrown short films.”

To see the Deadpool trailer on YouTube, you have to enter your birthdate, which tells you why we’re not posting it here . . . though it does have a couple of “Hey, is that Burrard Bridge?” moments.

Creative Saskatchewan has announced it’s now able to “commit funding up to $600,000 per applicant each year” — till now, it’s been $250,000 max. The Saskatchewan Media Production Industry Association says it’s pleased that a number of film projects are expected to be approved in the near future thanks to this change.”
