Revenant, Room, and Roadblocks to Quebecois Film

(via CBC.ca) The Revenant is premiering tonight in Yellowknife at Capitol Hill. As the film is not exactly for the faint of heart, or for people with weak stomachs, an event organizer will issue an advance warning to guests. To provide more assistance, any guests who feel uneasy from the graphic content can speak with a counselor who will attend the event as well. Aside from the violence, an actress from Fort Simpson gets brutally raped.

Adrian Mack of Straight.com writes that Lenny Abrahamson’s film Room is getting awards and praise from the Vancouver Film Critics’ Circle. A Canadian-Irish coproduction, Room tells the story of a mother and her 5-year-old,  Jack, who have been imprisoned all his life in a shed and have no access to the outside world. While they’ve got all the necessities, they’d rather see more of the world. So the two manage to make an escape and explore the city. This film has been nominated for best film, best screenplay, best actor, and best actress by the critics’ group.

Barry Hertz of the The Globe and Mail has posted about Quebecois Cinema getting stuck in its provincial borders. Film Festivals are a great opportunity for people’s work to get shown, but the sad thing is how the Quebecois films tend to just disappear after the Top 10 Screenings and are hardly ever heard from again. One of the biggest issues is that French-Canadian movies are hard to sell in other provinces though one of the more bigger issues is the French language. It is somewhat difficult to draw in viewers with subtitled films.
