(via CP/CBC) Two Animated Shorts from NFB to compete for nominations in the Oscars. If I Was God… and Carface are two popular Canadian animated shorts that look like potential Oscar winning material. Cordell Barker, an animator of Winnipeg created If I Was God… which is a dark mannered stop motion animation showing what would happen if a school student suddenly discovered he had God-like powers in class. Carface on the other hand is a short about a singing Chevy who sings what it’s like to be powered by what he calls “The Big Oil”. Created by Claude Cloutier, a cartoonist from Montreal.

Today, the NFB has launched The Faith Project which looks into the diversity of many religions throughout Canada. Using a deeper understanding of the many faiths, the seven different Canadians in The Faith Project explain how religion actually shapes up their personalities thus making their lives essential. A new app for the iPad has been released to show users the seven people and their different types of faith.

This weekend in Winnipeg, the 14th edition of the Winnipeg Aboriginal Film Festival is on. Bringing a lot of talent from around the world and showcasing many different films, this is the third largest Indigenous film festival in North America. Teghan Beaudette of CBC has recommended checking out Mekko, which is a film about a man who gets released from prison only to join the homeless of Oklahoma.

Yorkton Film Festival remembers WWI, reports The Yorkton News Review’s Devin Wilger. The festival’s open cinema program included a screening of Front Lines  (a compilation of many letters from actual Canadian WWI soldiers) and a presentation by Bill Waiser on what Canada did to contribute to the First World War. Waiser’s intentions were to make people aware of the soldiers who fought in the war which was supposed to be quick and simple, only to turn into a stalemate.
