Poison and Pink – Review on Boss Babe

Have you ever applied to some company or organization in the sales business? I know I have, and at one point someone almost got me into it through his application. Luckily, I found ways to escape them before completely applying and finding myself struggling with attempting to sell products, and I haven’t had to apply for a job in years anyway. Unless you count last year when I did scare actor work at Vancouver Horror Nights. But anyways, certain sales companies have ways of screwing you over in more ways than you’d expect, and we certainly learn one of the more bizarre ways in this little film, Boss Babe.

Starting out with what seems like a memorial service, it’s suggested that whoever this Boss Babe is has died. But how? Well, we get an introduction through a video of a young promoter named Sofi (Katelyn Doyle) inviting people to test out Bevlon makeup products. But even after making many video tape copies and sending them out to as many young independent girls as possible, she only gets two guests to join her who are already working in the business. Bobbi (Pooja Bhandari), who is at a bronze level by Bevlon standards and the highest ranking one, Lexi (Daisy Lankstead) brings along a new best friend, Dani (Selena Goosney), who is trying to make ends meet. What could possibly go wrong?

Well, Dani sits and listens as the three different Bevlon babes explain the advantages of selling Bevlon products and already it sounds like a cross between 2 multi-level marketing companies in Canada and a risky sales company in the area of Vancouver. Shortly after, they all drink some sour puss and Lexi instantly chokes on it and dies. As Dani and Bobbi try to hide the body, two of the highest ranking executives (Alex Bell and Heather Ngo) for Bevlon come by for Lexi and Sofi explains how Lexi has stepped out. So the executives decide to wait for their gold level colleague with no intention of stepping out soon. Dani reveals the truth finally and the two executives telling the other girls to find their own way of disposing the body. Sofi on the other hand, eventually decides to figure out who the culprit is behind the poisoning and before we know it, things get intense between her and the real assailant. Who is it? You’ll find out by watching.

A great film by Kassy Gascho, Boss Babe shows one risk in these kinds of marketing gigs that I never thought I’d see, but am kind of relieved that I haven’t experienced it at least. Interesting story that is twisted and hilarious, and a very good set design too. The majority of the set was pink, but I’m kind of used to it after watching the Barbie movie a couple weeks ago. We all know the dangers of selling products when we’re not cut out to be salesmen, and we also know how risky some sales companies can be. But I don’t think we’d expect something like this. Of course if it did happen, those businesses would disband even faster.
