5 Movies on Netflix Canada That Will Teach You Stuff about Investing

Nowadays, learning about trading can be done pretty much anywhere. There are so many crash courses and articles out there that you don’t have to worry about the lack of information. That being said, books are not the only source for you to learn the art of trading.

There’s something for Netflix enthusiasts as well. If you find yourself out of ideas about what to watch next, and want to eventually find a list of fx brokers accepting Canadian traders, here are a couple of movies that can get you off to a good start.

  • Betting on Zero

Betting on Zero is a documentary-type movie that follows the life of Bill Ackman, a billionaire activist investor that goes against Herbalife, placing a billion-dollar bet.

Ackman believes that the company is a pyramid scheme, so he tries to shorten their stocks in an attempt to prove it. The movie talks a lot about investments and pyramid schemes, along with what we can do so that we don’t become victims of them.

  • The Pit

The Pit came out about 5 years ago, and it follows a group of commodities traders from the New York Board of Trade. Very often, we are confused about what the life of a commodity trader looks like.

This movie takes a deeper dive into this matter, giving us a view of a lifestyle we’d normally not know about. It shows all the highs and lows from a realistic point of view, telling us exactly what we can expect.

  • The Big Short

The big short has all the big names on it: Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt, and Steve Carell. With this collection of actors, it’s bound to be a good movie. The movie itself covers the financial crisis of 2007-2008 in the United States – the one caused by the crash of the housing market.

It includes a variety of financial concepts and makes it easy to understand, even if you have no investing knowledge. There are also several sections in the movie where the cast speaks to the viewers directly, explaining concepts such as subprime mortgages.

  • Trading Places

Trading places is an old comedy – one that came out in 1983. The story follows a homeless and broke swindler and a commodity broker who switch places. The event was triggered by callous millionaires placing a bet, wanting to see how things will unfurl.

The comedy itself was made for entertainment, but it also contains a great deal of information about finances and investments. If you want to learn more about this world but don’t want to be bored to death, this is the movie for you.

  • Boom Bust Boom

If you find the world of finances dull, then Boom Bust Boom will change your mind. In this movie, Terry Jones (famed for his Monty Python work) explains everything with a little bit of humor. You have everything from skits to comedy and animation, making financial education more entertaining.

The Bottom Line

Learning about investments does not have to be dull. You just need to find the right movie for it and take the necessary notes. Thankfully, a good ol’ Netflix account will get you covered.
