Talent On Tap – Qsofresh releases Potion to the Masses

Some people are born with natural talent while others work hard to reach success. If you’re born with it and still work hard then you’re name might be Qsofresh! A Toronto Hip Hop artist with a new track Potion that just dropped on July 3rd. You can find it on Spotify but make sure you have the ear buds in to appreciate all the instruments, the mix of vocals, the tones and the Potion lyrics. This new track is a tribute to women that own their femininity and for the men that appreciate the beauty they have to offer. Qsofresh collaborated on Potion with another music talent Lil Keed. Together they’re vocals compliment each other and the music. I had my headphones on when I first listened to it – as a drummer, I immediately zeroed in on the bongos and the rest of the percussion before the vocals and keyboards flooded in like a warm waterfall of soothing bliss. Potion is catching fire and there isn’t enough water on the planet to put it out.

I spoke to Qsofresh and he told me Maddi Madd was also incredibly instrumental in getting this track completed. He’s also incredibly grateful to his dad, his parents and a close circle of friends he can count on… and they can count on him. Whether you’re in show business or the music business, you need to choose that circle carefully – have you seen the film Queen? Qsofresh is a young music artist blazing a trail to the top of the mountain and he’s bringing everyone that helped him, along with him. You’d be hard pressed to find another young music artist with so much gratitude for those that supported him along the way.

I caught up to him at his home in Toronto on Canada Day. We were both in a festive mood, so it made for a very good conversation.

“Congratulations on Potion and having it completed. You collaborated with Lil Keed, so I’m curious where it places in terms of Hip Hop.”

“I’m a versatile artist but overall, I’d say it’s a Hip Hop R&B lady track. That’s the style of the song, we mixed it up a little bit with some softer sounds.”

“What is Potion a reference to?”

“It’s about that girl that has that potion, she has it all and at the end of the day, all the guys are running after her.”

“You collaborated with Lil Keed on the song. How did that relationship happen?”

“It was a few years in the making but my whole team and I had connected with Universal Records and Maddi Madd, who’s had major success in the game. He’s worked with Ginuwine, Jodeci, Flo Rida and is also a 10 X Platinum Award winner. He liked my sound and everything else I was doing and he made me work. I was also very motivated by my dad – he pushed me to where I needed to be right now. My dad put in a lot of work and we executed a lot of it together. He’s been in the music business for a while and was in the group, 5 Aces.”

“You’re still quite new to the music scene. What are your musical influences?”

“I have a lot of influences/people that influence me. My dad is a big influence, Maddi Madd, Michael Jackson – when I was younger I liked to listen to Journey… that song ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ motivated the hell out of me. I also love Stevie Wonder, he really impresses me with his level of talent. I’m a versatile artist with a lot of influences but you also have to be self-motivated – especially in these times. You also have to have good people around you that have your back.”

“Do you play any instruments?”

“I used to play the violin and trumpet but I don’t play too much anymore – I’m more about making the music. I still like to play when I can, I think it’s a wonderful thing to do.”

“How did you come up with your name Qsofresh?”

“It’s my style – it’s what I do. I’d say I put my style together pretty good and obviously you got to have good hygiene; that’s what keeps you fresh always. Honestly, it’s the way I design my clothing, the artistic touches – the way I deliver my music. It all came together as one… ‘FRESH’ is a mentality not just the appearance.”

“If you were president for a day what’s the first thing you would change?”

“If I was president for a day – I would… honestly, I don’t know how to answer that; there’s so much going on right now. I don’t know what I’d do on that day… I would help a lot of people, that’s a definite. As president, that’s your first mission, your first duty – to make sure everyone’s straight. Other than that you just got to be a good president, do what’s right and do what’s true. Some people are into scheming but I don’t think anyone wants to look up to somebody like that. Just be true – be true to the people and stay true to what you’re doing. I wouldn’t know what to do at this moment though; I’d need more time to think about that one. Good question though.

“Considering you’ve collaborated with Lil Keed, would you ever consider collaborating with any female artists?”

“Yes definitely I would, female artists have a nice sound, especially when they have the talent and bring a lot to the table. I’d be up to collaborating with anyone, I love that stuff and wouldn’t have a problem with any of it. I’d want to work with Beyoncé or Rihanna – depends what they’re doing, if they want to work on a feature they’ll have to drop some coin then we can get something cracking.”

We continued to discuss female artists to more extent and we both agreed that Alicia Keys and Alessia Cara should also be on the list – so ladies, if you’re reading this Qsofresh would appreciate your company in the recording studio to help create the next hot track!

“If you were stranded on an island and your cell phone took on water damage but it managed to save 2 numbers – what 2 numbers would you hope to see saved?”

“I would definitely hope to see my pops number… he always comes through for me. Whenever I need him he’s there and whenever he needs me I’m there, so we definitely get to work – my dad for sure, No.1. The other number would be Maddi Madd. He comes through/comes crush every time – it doesn’t even matter where the hell you are; you could be in Atlanta, it doesn’t matter where you are, he comes through.”

“How does it feel to have come so far in your career?”

“It definitely feels good and I need to give thanks to all my supporters and people that have supported me through this – I couldn’t have done it without them. It’s not just myself that’s come this far, it’s also the people around me – a good atmosphere, good vibe and good spirit.”

“If you won a Juno/Grammy tomorrow, who’s the first person you would thank?”

“I would thank God first, then I’d thank my parents/family for everything they’ve done for me – I’d hit up Lil Keed too for sure.”

“How much time did you spend inside the studio working on the new track Potion?”

“It didn’t take too long to mix up the song – I did my part in the studio, he did his part. He was feeling the beat, so we went for it. It didn’t take too long for Keed, he was as smooth as water. It really depends on how long you want to take to make the music – you can sit on it for weeks or you can get that done in a day. We’re not there to sit around.”

“When you create a new song, does it start with the beat or the lyrics?”

“That’s a good one – it depends on how I feel, how the day is going. Usually I try to find the beat, then it’s easier to find a melodic flow – I write it off of the beat. If I don’t have a beat and I’m trying to create something completely brand new then I’d create a rhythm in my head and write to that rhythm. From there I’d give a holler to my beat guy and tell him to cook this up and that up – we’d put it together and make it happen.”

Qsofresh is looking forward to performing again in front of a live audience. His new music will be welcomed relief from his music fans. I think life has begun to get stale for most of us and having new music to listen to is like fresh baked bread – it fills the senses.
