Camille Sullivan Interview

Hollywood productions dominate the Canadian Film and TV industry. One performer who has consistently shined brightly in movies and TV shows set in Canada is Camille Sullivan. She starred as Laura Mohr on Shoresy, Francine Reardon in Intelligence, and we wrote about her performance in Exile. Camille Sullivan was the lead in She Talks to Strangers, which you can also look back at.

We spoke with Camille about her career, independent Canadian productions, and her bright future.

HNMAG: Did you grow up in Ontario?

Camille Sullivan: I did, in Toronto.

HNMAG: When did you become interested in performing?

Camille Sullivan: I attended an art school just outside of Toronto called the Etobicoke School of the Arts. I went for painting.

HNMAG: What grade was that?

Camille Sullivan: I started there in grade nine. They also had a drama program. I was able to do a couple of plays while I was there.

HNMAG: Nice.

Camille Sullivan: I’ve always loved movies. I went to UBC, and after my first year, I applied for the acting program and got in. Somehow, along the way, I decided that I would take a shot at it. I did manage to find an agent. I was also working as an usher at the UBC movie theatre and the Vogue. That was a great job. Then I started to book acting work, not tons and tons, but enough, so I quit all my jobs and just threw my hat in the ring for acting.

HNMAG: That’s terrific. You have been acting ever since.

Camille Sullivan: Yeah, and I mean it varies over the years. It’s been up and down, certainly, but I’ve always been able to make a living, and that’s the dream.

HNMAG: You have also done some writing?

Camille Sullivan: It’s mostly from being an actor cause I’ve worked on a couple of co-creations, so it was mostly an improv thing, although I do like to write as well, and like most actors, I’m working on a writing project.

HNMAG: Do you do you like comedy improv?

Camille Sullivan: I do. I haven’t done that much of it, but I did a couple of movies with Carl Bessai that were improvised and they were super fun. I had a blast doing them.

HNMAG: How do you find that you line up with these projects that are set in Canada?

Camille Sullivan: I like them, so when they come my way I say yes.

HNMAG: Right.

Camille Sullivan: I have a more artistic role than just being sort of one cog in a bigger machine. I would certainly not say no to a larger-budget movie either. And I think maybe my style is more suited to Canadian films in a way. Sometimes, it’s just what comes my way naturally. People seek me out for Canadian films more than for American stuff that shoots in Vancouver.

HNMAG: You also have larger parts in productions that are set in Canada. American productions often bring the leads up from LA.

Camille Sullivan: I’m lucky enough that people who work with me want to work with me again. It’s great working with people that you’ve already worked with because you have a shorthand and then I know what the experience is going to be like.

HNMAG: Is there another project that you are excited about?

Camille Sullivan: I have a movie that I shot about three years ago. It’s my first work in the States. I shot it in Cleveland called Shelby Oaks.

HNMAG: Oh wow.

Camille Sullivan: It was directed by Chris Stuckmann. Mike Flanagan has come on as well as an executive producer. Neon bought it, so it should get a wide release soon.

HNMAG: Oh great! You play Mia?

Camille Sullivan: Yes.

It was great to speak with one of our country’s best actors. Camille has been working in Vancouver as a professional film and TV actor for many years. There are very few performers who consistently put their Canadian foot forward in homegrown productions. Now, we can all head to the theatres soon to catch Camille Sullivan in a starring role in Shelby Oaks.
