Festivals and Awards This Summer

The Montreal World Film Festival (MWFF) is celebrating its 40th anniversary by adding $1 million (US) to its cash awards for the films competing. “No other festival in the world rewards its best films in that material way,” says MWFF Chairman Serge Losique. They’re calling it a Golden Chelem of World Cinema (chelem is French for slam, as in grand slam).

Elsewhere on the East Coast, the Nickel Independent Film Festival is set to begin on June 14th in St. John’s. In the Super 8 challenge, registered teams will be starting this weekend on their 3-minute shorts filmed with guess what. The Music NL 48-hr Music Video Challenge, which pairs filmmakers with musicians, will be open for submissions till May 25th. And of course, there’s a full lineup of screenings and workshops.

Finally, let’s head into the May 2-4 with a glimpse at the new British series on the woman whose birthday it marks. Jenna Coleman goes from sidekick in Doctor Who to title character in ITV’s Victoria.
