DRAKUL: A Review

DRAKUL, a  TV movie/series pilot, is about a vampire hunter and his partner battling an evil senator and rescuing kidnap victims in a world controlled by vampires. A screener version and four episodes are available online.

It starts with Detectives Helsinger and Morrison waiting for a meeting with their boss, Dr. Stewart, to receive payment for their last task. Instead, they are greeted by his assistant Lilith and her small entourage of rather sinister-looking associates. Lilith explains who she is, gives the men their next task and disappears with the other mysterious figures instantly.

The two detectives head over to a shady building where a missing victim is supposedly being held. After only a brief investigation, they get caught by the rather tall guard, who points out a sign saying trespassers would get shot. Helsinger explains what their purpose is as he shows a picture of their victim and also asks about Senator Drake, who’s responsible for many of the missing people as well as mysterious crimes around the city. The guard claims he hasn’t seen the victim nor Senator Drake in the building, so the two detectives leave. When the guard goes to the basement, however, we see he didn’t exactly tell the truth about everything. Morrison asks what they’re going to do next while Helsinger tries to figure that out. Just then, they are greeted with a surprise.

I like the way that the story is going, but the plot would be easier to follow if there was a little more explanation. Some of the dialogue was a bit hard to hear with the background noise, and the effects might need a little work too. Another small issue is the camera operating. I understand they’re trying to capture POV at times, but it’s best to keep a camera mounted on a tripod so the angle doesn’t ook the slightest bit shaky. It would help for the effects shots, too, to keep it stationary. Otherwise the show looks pretty good.
