Oh, the horror, the horror! That’s probably what my readers/fans are saying seeing as I rarely write these days. But that’s only because I’m more focused on acting to both make my resume several pages long and pay all of these other writers who each do a good job contributing content every weekday for all of you. Well, now it’s my turn. Recently, a filmmaker named Craig Layton from Nova Scotia reached out and sent me a link for his short film, Horror Inc. I don’t review a whole lot of short films as a standalone these days, but since twoviews and threeviews are fading into obscurity, it’s time to go back to a mini-review for the first time in oh, wow… uh, not too long ago. In this short film, you get your traditional horror of a woman (Shaylynn McMaster) being chased through the woods by a serial killer (Colin Deacon Glass). A slightly different approach from entering the old abandoned house or the back alley beating. When our poor damsel in distress loses her footing (no, she wasn’t barefoot, you fetishists) the killer rushes up for the kill, looking vaguely a lot like a character from TF2 except wielding a chainsaw when suddenly the unexpected happens. He’s halted by a group of crazy protestors who insist the forest be murder-free. Don’t you just hate when those types interupt your work? I’m lucky a bunch of geeks don’t swarm me for having the opinions I have. It looks like the woman will live another day as she escapes during the protest, but the killer charges after her again, and soon she’s about to find herself dead, but not before the killer deals with a quick survey. Okay then…
As someone who’s been expecting the unexpected for years now (probably due to a web series I watched), I certainly didn’t expect a short film like this. It’s not often I come across thrilling horrors like this. It actually had some clever comedy. While done in small doses and some being cheesy, the delivery was still seamless and even if lines weren’t the best, they were still made out perfectly. Quick but simple concept, well made shots even featuring some quick moments from a fictional livestream as lots of content is showing this nowadays, believeable actors and a forestic location that gives you a natural view of nature.
