Abraxas: Guardian of the Universe (Review)

This movie is about an alien named Abraxas who is sent off by his force to find an alien renegade. The renegade is Secundus, who is headed off to Earth, a planet the team hasn’t even heard of.

Abraxas and his foe fight in a snowy forest, shooting back and forth at each other with ray guns. When a car pulls over, Secundus kidnaps a woman named Sonia and impregnates her through a strange power right before getting teleported to a prison planet. Abraxas is now supposed to kill the girl, but disobeys the command as he has feelings. Sonia instantly gives birth to a baby and goes home with it while Abraxas teleports back to space.

Upon finding out the father isn’t around, Sonia’s parents disown her, so she moves out on her own and bonds with this strangely silent baby who she has named Tommy. Sonia has a nagging feeling he will be taken away. Eventually Secundus escapes and Abraxas is sent to capture him — and get hold of his socially awkward 6-year old son before Secundus does.

Secundus and Abraxas make it to Earth and fight through the same forest again, and eventually meet up at town hall, where the police also show up. Secundus escapes on a motorcycle while Abraxas runs after him. When Sonia and Tommy come home after an evening show, they find Abraxas who tells her they must leave quickly. They all make it to a friend of Sonia’s where they can lay low while Secundus continues his hunt. Abraxas helps teach Tommy how to be brave and Sonia slowly starts to bond with Abraxas.

When they get back to town,  Secundus manages to capture Tommy and traps him in a garage right as Abraxas shows up and they have a battle. It’s all up to Tommy to use the power he didn’t know he had.

Personally, I thought the movie was awkwardly written, there were a couple nonsensical plot-holes, blandish characters, really cheesy acting and it wasn’t so much action or space travel as it was escaping some alien figure by running through a forest. Still, I guess it’s okay for it to be a silly movie as it was made in 1990. Not everything was top notch back in late 80s/early 90s, just ask any other Internet reviewers.
