While YouTubers-turned-filmmakers Curry Barker and Kane Parsons are blazing trails at the box office, the commercial behemoths of 2027 are currently in development, one of which is the Superman sequel titled, fittingly enough, Man of Tomorrow.
A lot was riding on the 2025 superhero blockbuster Superman, as it was the first theatrical release of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s reboot of the cinematic DC universe, but thankfully the movie was an overall creative and commercial success, allowing the duo to continue the roadmap they envision. Supergirl releases later this month, while the body horror Clayface is slated to come out on October 23rd, but Man of Tomorrow is DC’s only slated feature film of 2027, aiming for a July 9th release.
Of course, this is hardly surprising given that Man of Tomorrow is the sequel to the single most important entry in the DCU’s young history, not to mention Superman (David Corenswet) is its tentpole character, equating to the Iron Man of the DCU, if you will. As such, it makes sense that as filming is underway, Gunn, ever the social media user, would begin releasing behind the scenes images of the production a whole thirteen months prior to release.
So far there have been two official images released, the first and most notable among them offering a first look at Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor in his infamous Warsuit, which had already been confirmed to appear in the movie by Gunn. The second image was released over the weekend and showcases Superman, slightly out of focus in the distance, walking towards the doorway of the Fortress of Solitude.
There are, however, additional images of the shoot that have been taken without permission and leaked, including Superman and a suited-up Lex duking it out in the streets. Nonetheless, all images thus far, whether they be official or leaked, have been limited to the bitter rivals portrayed by David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult. So, no look yet at Lars Eidinger’s Braniac, or even Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner for that matter, and while we can be sure that his haircut will be as gloriously hideous as it was in Superman, it is his role both here and in the upcoming TV show Lanterns that’s up for debate.
Meanwhile, in other news, Bill Nighy is the latest actor to be cast in the upcoming John Wick spinoff Caine, which centers on the titular fan-favourite blind assassin from John Wick: Chapter 4 portrayed by Hong Kong legend Donnie Yen, who will also serve as the movie’s director. The supporting cast also includes Dacre Montgomery and Mason Thames, while pop star Rina Sawayama will reprise her role as Shimazu Akira.
It is particularly interesting that Yen has chosen to direct this movie in addition to playing the lead role, yet it is also unsurprising. The actor and martial artist actually has a long history of serving as a fight choreographer and action director, in addition to having directed Hong Kong action movies such as Legend of the Wolf (1997), Ballistic Kiss and Shanghai Affairs (both 1988). Yen had not directed a feature length movie in almost twenty-years before helming 2023’s Sakra, and then 2024’s The Prosecutor, while also playing the lead role in both productions. Thus, it makes perfect sense that he would want to direct Caine, which will also mark the first English language feature he has directed.
Keanu Reeves will serve as a producer on Caine, and while the movie has been confirmed to take place after the events of John Wick: Chapter 4, the Canadian action star seemingly will not appear in the movie, which makes sense given how things ended in Chapter 4, plus they are likely saving his character’s return for John Wick: Chapter 5.
There is no confirmed release date for Caine yet, but given that principal photography is still ongoing, it is all but certain to drop some time in 2027.
