The Saskatchewan Motion Picture Production Industry Association (SMPIA) wants to remind friends of the industry that their votes can do a lot in the provincial elections on April 4th. “Reach out to your MLA to start the conversation about supporting the media production industry,” says an SMPIA flyer which you can download here. Another thought from them: “Film is good business.”
And there’s lots more in the works at TIFF Bell Lightbox going into the spring. We’ve already told you about the 2016 TIFF Kids Festival; also back this year is Just For Cats: Internet Cat Video Festival (which also lets humans in, fortunately). The Free Screen on May 14th lives up to its name not only by charging nothing but by showcasing the experimental films of Peter Gidal. Also free are the screenings of Canadian classics Buffalo Airport Visions (1967), Eugene Levy’s Garbage (1969), and several more, presented under the Canadian Open Vault program, on May 17th. Stephen Broomer, author of Hamilton Babylon: A History of the McMaster Film Board, will be there to speak. It’s followed by The Cockroach That Ate Cincinnati on the 24th.
