Low Dollar Benefits, Game of Homes Casting Call, Telefilm Funding

More on how the low dollar — plus “the support of government, depth of movie crew talent and quality of facilities and studios” is giving a boost to the film industry in the Lower Mainland of BC, this time from The Burnaby NewsLeader’s Justin Beddall.

(Via CNW)Here’s a kinda specialized casting call: Game of Homes is looking for amateur home renovators and/or designers in Ontario, in teams of two, to compete for a free house (yes, land underneath is included). Teams can apply online or in-person at open casting calls in Oshawa on August 8 and Toronto on August 15. Details at W Network.

Telefilm has announced it’s funding 14 English-language films through the Canada Feature Film Fund — 11 of them lower-budget. The full list is here at their site. While it does represent a “variety of genres and stories” as Carolle Brabant says, there seems to be a recurring element of unlikely couples: Brother-in-law and sister-in-law, home invader and home owner, two seniors in a care home, middle aged professor and young artist, suicidal teen and reason to go on living . . .

Vancouver has stood in for many places, but in Descendants, a Family Channel film airing tomorrow (Friday), it’s the Isle of the Lost, where Disney villains and their families are exiled. Victoria, in contrast, is “the pristine kingdom” where the younger generation gets a shot at redemption. Michael D. Reid of The Times-Colonist reports, in a piece that somehow got picked up by The Vancouver Sun.
