DGC Nominees, French Viceland, Drive-In Movies in BC

(Via PRNewswire) The Directors Guild of Canada has announced its 2016 DGC Awards nominees, and as it says they’re “a diverse selection.” Among them: Paul Gross, Hyena Road, for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film (see our review here); Samir Rehem, What Would Sal Do? (Episode 101), filmed in Northern Ontario, for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Comedy Series; and Haida Gwaii: On the Edge of the World for the Allan King Award for Excellence in Documentary. (Haida Gwaii being a “beautiful island inhabited by some of the most interesting people . . . Even more interesting is the fact that this was produced and shot by only three people.”) For a full list, see here.

(Via CNW) In a meeting of the V’s, Vice Media and Groupe V Media have partnered to bring Viceland, the 24-hour channel aimed at Millennials, to French Canada. The partnership will mean “the creation of a television studio, the development of French Canadian versions of VICE’s digital channels and the creation of an entity specializing in content marketing as well as the development of international distribution agreements” according to the companies.

(Via Marketwired) And Fountain Tire’s announced another drive-in movie night in BC, this one in Abbotsford. As we noted in yesterday’s news video, the company’s celebrating its 60th anniversary with an Open Road Cinema Tour, complete with entertainment from the time of its founding — though the film itself will be a “blockbuster”, as well as family-friendly. It’s all free but registration is recommended, and it happens at the Abbotsford Flying Club, Wednesday, July 6th.
