Another Mother: Video Supports Children’s Villages

(Via CNW) Another Mother, a short video that goes live today, answers the question “What happens when you send a Canadian mother to Africa… and she has to be a mother to a family of orphaned and abandoned children? ” The mom in this case is Amanda Martinez, singer, songwriter, actress, and mother of three. The eight kids she lived with for several days are residents of an SOS Children’s Village in Namibia.

SOS Children’s Villages is the largest organization in the world working with orphaned and abandoned children, according to a press release. Instead of housing them in orphanages, the group places five to ten kids each in a home with an extensively trained local woman. The children grow up with food, health, shelter, and education — plus a permanent family.

Day to day life in these homes can get as frantic as in any large family’s. In Another Mother, Amanda Martinez copes with walking the youngest to school at 6 AM, doing laundry in a machine that has to be moved out to the backyard, and unfamiliar Namibian etiquette (eating porridge with your fingers is fine, talking during a meal is bad manners). As SOS Villages says, it’s “a day that has both humourous and heartwarming moments.”
