Canadians Make Their Own TV Schedules

(Via PRNewswire) The new TV season? What’s that? A survey of over 1700 Canadians by Videology found that 39%  said they didn’t even know September was the beginning of the new season. So, does anyone (besides me) still look forward to it? Sure, but 25% said they didn’t “because good TV is available all year long.”

“Consumers no longer have to follow the scheduling of TV networks — they can make their own schedules,” said Scott Ferber, Chairman & CEO of Videology. His company’s survey bears that out — nearly half (49%) of those surveyed said they watch the majority of their favourite TV shows online. On the topic of favourite shows, 76% said theirs airs “somewhere other than network TV” and of those, 37% said their favourite show airs only online.

Each year major networks and cable channels negotiate rates for their new fall programming, and this study comes out just as these negotiations end. Videology, a leading software provider for converged TV and video advertising, also conducted a similar survey in the U.S. with similar results. (If anything, the trend is further advanced there.)

Ferber thinks “the idea of a yearly ‘TV season’ may soon be a distant memory.”
