NFB/SVOD, VCAD FX, NSI FYI

The NFB is getting on board with the trend to subscription video-on-demand (SVOD). The NFB Shorts page at Vimeo offers unlimited viewing for $4.99  a month. Fourteen films are up as of now, including Cordell Barker’s If I Was God, which played at the LA Shorts Fest, and Mike Maryniuk’s Home Cooked Music, a selection at Hot Docs. Viewers can also buy, or rent-to-stream, films a la carte.

(Via Marketwired) The Visual College of Art & Design (VCAD) is now offering a Visual Effects Art & Design program (no, the V doesn’t stand for Vancouver, but that’s where the school is located — “home to some of the largest special effects stages in the continent and largest film stage in the world”). Learn more, including how to apply, at VCAD’s site.

The National Screen Institute – Canada (NSI) is also offering a chance at training; together with Shaw Media, it’s now accepting applications for the Shaw Media Diverse TV Director program. Four diverse directors who are female and/or Aboriginal (male or female) and/or a visible minority (male or female) and/or a person with a disability (male or female) will be chosen for some intensive training. Applicants should have some directing experience and be ready to make the leap to “the fast-paced, market-driven world of series television.” Deadline is March 14th, and more details are here.
