AFF Awards, The Magicians, and Savvy Girls

Belated congratulations to the winners of the 35th Atlantic Film Festival awards, who were announced on Sunday. Best Atlantic Short went to Ashley McKenzie’s 4 Quarters while Strange and Familiar: Architecture on Fogo Island, by  Katherine Knight and Marcia Connolly, won Best Atlantic Documentary. A full list is online here, and the Festival itself goes on until Thursday.

Speaking of that belatedness, our attention was taken up by TIFF (as it’s about to be taken up by VIFF), and at The Province, Heather Magee has her own list of hits and misses from the Festival in TO.

The Magicians, a series coming out on Syfy next year (based on the Lev Grossman novel) is filming in Metro Vancouver — with lots of green screen, our source on the set tells us, and the magic to be added in post. It’s the story of a brilliant but socially inept young wizard at a university where you can major in magic.

(Via CNW) DHX has announced its new series for Family Channel: Savvy, aimed at tween girls and exploring what happens “when three very different girls, who feel like they’re drowning in a tidal wave of tutus, tiaras, and princess dresses, decide to take creative control of their situation.” Production begins in Toronto next month.
