Le technicien (Review)

For once I see a foreign film which I don’t find completely weird. Well, I might have a while back. But this one is different because it’s not from Traveling.

As the title suggests, it’s about a technician (Simon Olivier Fecteau), specifically from cable TV.

Our protagonist, the Technician, arrives at his client’s house. The client is an elderly man (Pierre Collin) with a completely broken TV. Could be worse. But upon investigating, the technician reveals it’s not broken, it’s an old TV with a blurry screen.

The elderly man flips through every single channel and it shows nothing but the sad truth of the world. Every single news channel, and they all have a sad report. Terrorist attacks, Stock Market crashes, a kid goes missing, and even a curling champ being unable to go to the olympics because his team is incomplete. Yeah, when the athlete is named “Furby” there’s no hope in going to the curling championship whatsoever.

The technician decides to check the cable and see what he can do. After a fake check in the back, the Technician does a quick check outside, also fake. Great. Waste each other’s time. The technician simply drives away as if he’s not coming back. His customer didn’t even have the nerve to call the company and complain. Day turns into night and the elderly man is still watching news. But unexpectedly, he sees all the world’s problems are being solved by… Guess who.

The ending is more than just that, though. It’s comedic and cliche, but it works. The reports were so legit-looking I thought they were real news reports at first. The story is hilarious and interesting, and the whole layout worked perfectly. It’s strange, though. I feel like I’ve seen several different short films like this in the past. I also feel like TV technicians are the only force that could save the world, the way things are going now…
