Deep Web Opens in TO: Reeves Narrates Doc on Silk Road’s Ulbricht

(Via WireService.ca) Deep Web opens in Toronto at the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema on July 3, after what the creators call “a super successful festival run.” The documentary focuses on the arrest of Ross William Ulbricht, recently convicted as the “Dread Pirate Roberts” behind online black market Silk Road. The film is narrated by Keanu Reeves.

The film features exclusive interviews with the Ulbricht family, including Ross’ parents Lyn and Kirk Ulbricht. Other interviewees include Cody Wilson, a crypto-anarchist known for his development of the “3D printed gun,” and many more.

“The people at the front end of creating reform in the digital space are the people at the front end of creating encryption and anonymity tools that work,” says Director Alex Winter. “I think that they’re not only going to win, but the thing to remember is that it’s not the government versus these people. A lot of these tools are being created by people in the government, and not all of them are called whistleblowers.”

The film explores the impact of the Ulbricht trial on the future of technological freedom around the world.
