Blind Luck and Backyard: Mini-Reviews

Today, I decided to take a look at a couple two-minute animated Canadian movies. The first was called Blind Luck, a movie about an elderly woman and her dog. Since the woman is blind, the dog has to help her across the street, but the traffic is dangerously busy. He suddenly gets the urge to play with the squeaky ball in her bag, only to lose it. Things get chaotic after he tries to chase his favourite toy, but his owner remains unharmed. This little short certainly had its funny moments even though I’m not into comedy involving slapstick and frequent accidents. This seems like a short film perfect for watching before a full length animation. However, next I watched another two-minute vid.

The next movie was called The Backyard, which was some kind of artistic movie. It featured watercolour backgrounds of nature scenes. A mild drum beating was in the background. There wasn’t really any plot to this, it just showed hand-made paintings changing from flowers to trees to mountains to really colourful and odd textures. Even though the changing made me dizzy and some effects were a little too awkward looking, this certainly was a unique movie. I haven’t seen too many like this one. I decided to check out one last movie.

The final short film I saw was called Will to Fly, another animation, only this time about a little boy who has an ambition to fly, in a bathtub, through a pink cloud zone, with whales and ducks. Yes, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but it works out well because the movie captures imagination very well. A little too well, actually as the ending is a bit dark for a short innocent movie. That’s what caught me off-guard. Other than the ending, everything else seemed pretty well done and interesting.
