Beau Comme Dans Les Films: A Review

Today I checked out a French Canadian romantic comedy called Beau Comme Dans Les Films. (That’s “beautiful as in the movies”.) This is a short film about a teenage girl with a large interest in romance.

The movie starts showing our protagonist Jade waking up in a room full of balloons, as it is her birthday. While she eats breakfast and listens to music she describes her interest in a boy named Dave. He is a rebellious student who has failed grades twice, but Jade often finds herself fantasizing about him even though he sends notes to other girls but never pursues them romantically. Jade wants to be married to Dave and she fantasizes about him, during her birthday party, and even at school.

Jade’s friends seem to be aware of these feelings she has. Every time she sees him her mind teleports her into a romantic fantasy where Dave comes to her and they share a passionate moment or he rescues her from something.

This is certainly an interesting type of film and it shows how a girls’ mind can work at times. But, being set in the 1990’s, it’s at somewhat of a distance from today’s youth. Almost all the girls have really weird hairstyles and I don’t think anyone has attended a party since 2007 or so without spending the whole time staring at their phone. The artistic direction was a bit confusing for me and I couldn’t tell if the end was real or fantasy, but it was delivered well to finish the movie perfectly.

Available on Indieflix.
